Remember in high school when all the
cool kids got together and decided to
throw a house party? That's how it was
at the inaugural New York Fucking City,
the Saturday night party that took over
the subterranean Good Units at the
Hudson Hotel in midtown. Produced by
Jake Resnicow of the Matinee Group, and
the wunderkinds behind Griffin Sundays,
Brian Rafferty and Shawn Paul Mazur, the
resultant bash was a bang-up, mash-up of
uptown-downtown fabulosity and funk
drenched in deep, sexy beats.
For those who have yet to hit Good
Units, the space is remarkably like a
secondary school gymnasium, complete
with bleachers and balcony, with the
added compensation of a galaxy of disco
balls. In other words, imagine a
gymnasium for the kids from Glee - and
then imagine an open call for Glee
auditions, and you've got a good idea of
the packed house of sexy, savvy boys and
sultry girls who turned it out on
Saturday night.
DJ Theresa worked her bongos with as
much ferocity as she worked the boards,
layering such celebratory chestnuts as
"Pride (A Deeper Love)," "Only Girl (In
the World)," "Hey, Hey," "Free," "Get
This Party Started," in a booty-shaking,
bass-thumping, crowd-pleasing set - and
DJ Billy Lace returned to the booth at
three in the morning, inciting the happy
revelers into a frenzy with his "Bucci
Bag" mash-up.
The crowd was young, chic, and brainy,
working stylish ensembles that were as
calculated as their tousled hair - while
the go-go dancers paraded from box to
box to stage in a veritable fashion show
of outrageously fierce accessories and
skimpy beach attire.
There's a long and proud history of gay
Saturday night clubs in Manhattan,
including but not limited to the Saint,
the Garage, the Ice Palace, 12 West, the
River Club, Flamingo, the Roxy, and
about a dozen others. Resnicow,
Rafferty, and Mazur are committed to
bringing that tradition to its latest
incarnation. After all, as they remind
us, "This is the city that we love. This
is New York Fucking City."
