Once upon a time a feckless, frail youth
named Steve Rogers ingested a
super-serum and was transformed into a
perfect physical specimen of homo
sapiens. Hmm. Sounds like another night
at Alegria. In Rogers' case, he became
Captain America, the First Avenger.
Originally created in 1941 to aid the
United States war effort against the
Axis powers of World War II, Captain
America was unleashed to fight
intolerance and hate - and what better
hero to celebrate on Memorial Day
weekend at Alegria America.
With a US President stating
unequivocally his support for same-sex
marriage, the Avengers of Same-Sex Love
flooded the dance floor at producer Ric
Sena's annual Memorial Day dance
marathon, which featured DJs Renato
Cecin and Eddie Elias.
Cecin, who has held fabled residencies
at São Paulo super-clubs such as The
Week, X-Demente, and Level Club, made
his Alegria debut in 2009 - and since
then, the Brazilian inferno has won
numerous fans with his relentless beat
mixing and an energy level that
escalates exponentially.
Today's new world order is often
referred to with the acronym BRIC, for
Brazil, Russia, India, and China - the
current "Big Four" economic powerhouses
- and Cecin's return to Alegria was a
testament to Brazilian prowess.
Cecin's fiercely contagious set was
complemented by a go-go corps of
Avengers, a squadron of perfect
specimens whose jaw-dropping pulchritude
was evidence of the transformative power
of that Captain America super-serum.
Just before sunrise, Elias took control
of the booth. With his recent New York
residencies, the Dominican-born Elias
has become synonymous with after-hours
parties that recall the heydays of
Elias's mentors Junior Vasquez and
Victor Calderone.
Throughout the night, lighting captain
Stephen Wyker bathed the club in a
patriotic wash of red, white, and blue
that kept a battalion of same-sex
Avengers grinding toward freedom on the
dance floor.
As always, with his customary bonhomie
and the military precision of a
four-star general, producer Sena oversaw
the myriad details of his successful
franchise - which even included red,
white, and blue sprinkles on the VIP
brownies.
A star-spangled all-night tribute,
Alegria America celebrated the freedom
that comes from being soldiers of love.
