The lesbian thing about gay men is how much they appreciate
foreplay—in their music. And on Saturday afternoon for the Heatwave
Pool Party at the
Surfcomber,
DJ Wendy Hunt (a self-professed gay
man in a lesbian’s body) werked over the burgeoning mass of men and
boyz (and everything in between), gradually and carefully exciting
them into release just as the sun set—just as she, and they, wanted
it.
Given that
Hilton Wolman’s party White Dreams
at
Karu&Y from the previous night had
ended but an hour before the start of the Heatwave Pool Party,
foreplay was appreciated. The sky was streaked with cirrus clouds,
keeping the sun from bleary eyes. Cocktails were in order—and in
abundance (and particularly those pre-filled plastic martini glasses
in tropical colors). Wandering the
Surfcomber’s pool and lawns always
feels like returning to one of the nicer homes on Fire Island,
Ibiza, or the like—made all the more festive this afternoon by the
coils of paillette-spangled white decorations created by
RKM Futureboys. Sip, sip, chat,
chat—and then came a performance complete with billowing white sails
and bongo drums and a diva called Shelina.
Thereafter
Wendy Hunt kicked it up a notch.
Enough with the foreplay—let’s get down to ass bumpin’ business.
Once again, she packed her floor with her infectious and uplifting
groove, as if to say, Werk it out, boyz; ain’t no day like today.
As she (and Ms. Jennifer Holliday) had it, “And I’m Telling You (I’m
Not Going)”—not until she got what she wanted: a massive release on
her dance floor. She got that—and not only on da flo. Over
on the north side of the pool, a gaggle of kiki boyz started to
walk. Walk, they said, using the pool deck as a runway. They
werqed that catwalk, doing backflips and cartwheels, half-twists and
high kicks—until the crowd paid notice with wild applause and
cheers. It escalated from there: using life preservers and pool
umbrellas, those joyous boyz created a spontaneous and mesmerizing
thirty-minute show which ran like
Cirque de Soleil hosted by the
Houses of
Aviance and
Infiniti.
See it now on YouTube—but
next time, do yourself one better: get thee to the Pool Party. (And
in the interim, buy the
White Party 8
CD (Centaur
Music), perfectly mixed by
Wendy Hunt and
Warren Gluck). For what’s more fun
than a day in the sun—while doing good for
CareResource who does so much good
for others?
