For years, the
White Party Pool Party was a casual affair: a buncha lazy boyz
flopped on chaises drinking big lady cocktails. Then CareResource
got wise and realized that the boyz of South Beach love few things
as much as a day party spent parading their bods and advertising
their wares—and so the White Party Pool Party got a makeover. And
this year, the Pool Party got glam and moved uptown to the
still-being-renovated Eden Roc. $180 million later—and this year’s
Pool Party was a new breed altogether.
By the time we walked through Morris Lapidus’s even-more-fabulous po-mo
homo lobby, the revamped back pool area leading down to the ocean
was packed with enough pulchritude to send one father and three sons
running for cover. Basketballs in hand, they’d wandered through the
crowd—before that slow-dawning awareness hit them that they were in
the minority—whereupon, they skedaddled. Hurry home, boys—or we
might just eat you alive!
Too bad the baby ravers left—because, truth be told, DJ Oren Nizri’s
sexy South Beach set would’ve had them grooving and moving,
regardless of whether they were hetero or not. This was Nizri’s
first White Party Pool Party and right from the start, it was
obvious the local favorite had done his homework and put together a
set that was as unconventional as it was contagious. We talking
Moby’s “I Like To Move In Here” and Gusto’s "Disco Revenge" and
Dirty South’s "Let It Go." The sort of beats that gave a kind of
sexy South Beach bounce to everyone on the roam. The boyz werked it
out while taking it off—and about the only thing missing were the
poles. Well, one kind of pole, anyway…
Then slowly, it hit people: There’s a fashion show going on here.
Rufskin Fashions. http://www.rufskin.com/ The models were taking
their laps around the pool’s perimeter. It was genius: a fashion
show on the down low! You had to work to see which boyz were the
real models—they were walking their walk through the crowd, flashes
popping in their wake. It was true South Beach street
fashion—because here on the Beach, the beach IS the street. And
given that it’s the Beach, it was only a matter of minutes before
the models were parading in little more than white garters. What’s
not to love?
By the time DJ Oren Nizri plated Sunfreakz “Counting Down the Days,”
the sun had begun its descent. And by then, it was clear to all that
Nizri had given this party a distinctively South Beach spin that was
equal parts jiggle and bounce mashed with slink and strut. His was
the kind of high-tripping music made for groovin’ by a pool at the
ocean’s edge, a prime pool party vibe—and the perfect segue into the
evening as we all headed to Vizcaya.
Here’s to makeovers that make everyone look good all over again—and
to the White Party Pool Party for making local boyz shine even
brighter.
