That was it. Last night the last Saturday at Maze, once known as
Salvation. Manny Lehman in control and we under his spell from the
moment we walked in around one a.m. Right into the middle of (I Only
Want to Dance) With You, a song associated for us with the picture
of Kitty and Power working the stage, and Manny worked that number
into such a frenzy that no one left the floor until he closed down
at five. He played a beautiful set of hauntingly uplifting music
with a strong sustained backbeat and the crowd was his. He wove in
old songs from the last year and imbued them with new life. (You
Don't) Appreciate Me slipped into a low beat and some in his booth
started clapping and so did the crowd at large until Manny laughed
and bowed. There was no question Manny was appreciated last night..
Salvation/Maze had a good run, with a lot of talent coming out of
those Saturday nights. Now the building will become an Office Depot
-- - and we laughed to think about all the employees at Office Depot
catching the beats of Salvation nights past.
It was a great party, with lighting that was dark and sensual. There
were so many good dancers – and most of them free to dance without
any self-consciousness thanks to the dark lighting.
And well-behaved. Polite and happy. A perfect Salvation Revelation
Saturday night in the middle of WinterParty 2004 – and all the more
meaningful because it was the last one. The end of reality, and the
start of memory.
One more thing: this year's Pool Party yesterday afternoon with
Lydia Prim at the helm was equally inspiring – to the tune of 106
photos, soon to be posted.
