For
anyone in need of a massive infusion of
romance, there are few things better than
finding yourself on the top deck of the Fire
Island Ferry heading back to Sayville under
a moonlit night as fireworks explode over
your shoulder in an already-starry sky.
And on top of that, you’re still beaming
from Baydance, where the Perry Twins turned
it out with a set of summer favorites
remixed and mashed up in a loving Fire
Island Pines style that focused on
hands-in-the-air exuberance.
And as you turn to watch the fireworks
illuminating the sky, a handful of green
lasers stretches toward you across the Great
South Bay, much like the green light that so
transfixed Jay Gatsby—and you’re reminded
anew why it is that boys by the score land
on the enchanted shores of Fire Island.
In fact, the scene at 531 Sail Walk, the
plush locale of Baydance, evoked those house
parties that Jay Gatsby threw when he opened
his Long Island estate to the young and
beautiful, the rich and powerful. The
definitive Independence Day Weekend Pines
house party, Baydance is a benefit for Fund
in the Sun Foundation, the non-profit public
charity that helps underfunded LGBT
organizations—with this year’s Baydance
proceeds benefiting the NYC LGBT Community
Center.
Produced by FornabaioVoss Events, those
wunderkinds behind several of Manhattan’s
more popular weekly parties including Rockit
and Club 57, this year’s Baydance included a
particularly large cast of nubile young
things who poured through the gates of 531
Sail Walk like a school of iridescent fish
(a metaphor which is in no way connected to
the fact that every ticket to Baydance
included an all-night, open bar…)
This was a house filled with Mr. Bigs,
including Matthew Bank, Hal Rubenstein,
David Nickle, Steve Weinstein, Eric von
Kuersteiner, Brad Carpenter, Ryan Bell, Josh
Wood, Brandon Voss, Tony Fornabaio, Adam
Weaver, Russell Roybal—as well as a harem of
glamazons, and the always-irrepressible
Robin Byrd. And there was go-go god
Geronimo, inflamed with the spirit of
Terpsichore, and the always-delicious
Michael D’Arinzio, —and boys such as Corey
Hill, Alex Breitman, James Calero, and Chris
Vaughan packed like penguins on the floating
dance floor, which bobbed and throbbed in
the Great South Bay.
And as the sun slipped below the horizon,
the boys paused to aim and shoot, digital
cameras at the ready—before night took over,
ushering in recording star Debby Holiday,
the voice behind such summer anthems as
“Dive” and “Surrender Me,” singing her
latest hit “Heaven.”
Sponsors included Zico coconut water, which
is, surely, summer’s essence in a bottle—and
the perfect post-excessive exuberance
rejuvenator. Worked for us!
As for the fireworks, there were starbursts
and pinwheels in pink, purple, white, and
red, shooting into the sky like jeroboams of
bubbly—while onboard the ferry, a group of
tipsy revelers performed their own spotty
rendition of “The Star-Spangled Banner.”
One thing’s for sure: this year’s Baydance
proved that the Pines is hotter than ever.
Mark your calendars now for
Ascension Weekend, the 13th -15th
of August 2010.
Fire Island Pines—summer just keeps getting
better.
