Some people take the measure of a summer
by the libidinous heat of a Memorial Day
weekend - and if Alegria Memorial Day is
any indication, 2013 is going to be a
heartwarming scorcher.
Ric Sena's legendary party returned to
Pacha, the scene of its halcyon youth,
for an underwater fantasy that was
swarming with neon jellyfish and
fluorescent sea anemones and a gaggle of
seahorse go-go boys.
Befitting the party's return to its
youthful roots, Alegria Memorial Day was
all about youth: schools of sleek and
shirtless guppy boys swimming together
in tandem, cavorting like Nemo through a
Technicolor ocean.
The party was packed with the "Calagria"
tribe, a posse of Alyson Calagna
fanatics (including Tod and Gorm, two of
Calagna's most dedicated devotées), who
live for the deejay's Alegria
appearances.
Alegria Memorial Day welcomed Calagna
and DJ Danny Verde from Milan, playing
together for the first time - and it was
Verde who set the tone with his
fist-pumping high energy that kept the
boys bobbing and surfing the waves of
his hands-in-the-air set. Verde has
manic energy to spare and he bodysurfed
the booth as Rob Montenegro's aquatic
videos washed over the club's LED
screens in complement to Stephen Wyker's
resplendent light designs.
What was quickly noticeable - and
anecdotal as well - was the abundance of
happy-together couples, young boys with
their brand-new summer loves. Or as one
of Calagna's infectious mixes admonished
the gorgeous guppies, "I been looking
for you; you been looking for me. Let's
get together and do what comes
naturally."
Some of the big fish in the pond
included Alegria residents and VIVA
deejays such as Eddie Elias and Twisted
Dee, as well as Eddie Martinez, and
George Dellinger, and a raft of Task
Force staff swimming for fun, as well as
Broadway stars and sweet smiling
starfish boys and boys like angelfish,
so lovely to look at.
Long after the sun rose beyond the
Alegria aquarium, the night fish swam
on, happy little fishies swimming into
the summer of 2013. "There's a time to
be wild, there's a time to be free,"
went the lyrics to another of Calagna's
contagious beats. Alegria Memorial Day
was a reminder to jump into the water
and soak up the joy. Here's to another
hot and sexy New York summer. |
