Picture a perfect day. A perfect summer
day on Governors Island, scene of New
York's biggest outdoor Pride party.
Matinée New York Pride was EVERYTHING -
and exactly what you wanted on the
Saturday evening of New York City Pride
weekend. Ferryboats full of boys
disembarking onto Governors Beach Club,
a sandy island sanctuary off the
southern tip of Manhattan, and DJ Billy
Lace turning it out, working the kiki
boys into a froth before handing the
turntables over to Hector Fonseca, who
opened with his remix of "Empire State
of Mind" as the sun began its descent
behind New York.
And thereafter, everything about Matinée
Pride New York became glorious,
Dionysian abandon as the energy
escalated into an outdoor performance
extravanganza. British songstress
Natasha Bedingfield appeared like Glinda
from Oz, bestowing her raft of
chart-topping hits on an adoring crowd
who sang along with every word to her
new single "I Need a Miracle" as
fireworks exploded in the sky.
Confetti bombs still swirling, Iberian
sensation Taito Tikaro took control of
the tables. Opening with a ferocious
remix of Zoe Badwi's "Release Me,"
Tikaro was surrounded by a thirty-person
corps of Matinee dancers who rewrote the
book on fierce and flamboyant. And oh,
did those kids work! Up and down and
over and around that stage in a series
of outrageous ensembles, accessorized in
lace, leather, crystals, beading, and
tulle - proving yet again that excess
is...EVERYTHING!
And EVERYTHING on Saturday at Governors
Island was Matinée - proving again that
Matinée New York is here to stay.
