Q: How was the Pool Party with DJ Phil B?

A: Maybe the best party of the week, in that it's always so easy. It takes so little to "be there" and find the right spot. It's a perfect setting (juxtapose it to the White Party's pool party at the Royal Palm this year, which was dead in the water) and the right afternoon (Saturday mood, everyone happy, no work, all play) and excellent sight lines and no shadows from other buildings and a perfect flow, so that it feels like a club as you're wandering about, but you're outside, on the sand, and the ocean's there, too. Hello? Is this perfection or what?

Q: What about Roland Belmares & Tracy Toung's music?

A: We first fell in love with Roland, and his music, and his enthusiasm at a beach party a couple of years ago. The way he worked his leg to the music and his infectious grin -- and he was  equally captivating this year, and better, actually, because his music has deepened in complexity, or so it seemed to us, and as for Tracy, we thought she did a fine job, and neither of us were the least bit put off by her selections. For us, outdoor parties are as much about the setting and the people as they are about the music, and therefore, it might mean that the music is but one part of the recipe. It's cooking over a campfire instead of in a kitchen with Viking appliances -- and that's when you're happy with almost whatever you get served.

Q: What was Sean Defretias's production design at the beach party?

A: Giant wedges of fruit -- as if they'd exploded from Carmen Miranda's hat and were falling from heaven.

Q: Was attendance really up this year?

A: It seemed so to us. Particularly at the Pool Party and on Sunday night, where both Abel and Victor drew crowds which left no room on the dance floor to do anything but the circuit boy rock.

Q: Was Mark Baker wise to move Ice Palace to Friday?

A: I think so, because, for us, the Ice Palace Studios is NOT a perfect venue and too much expectation (like last year) makes you want it to be an exemplary setting, which it isn't, because it's a warehouse, so it's better to make it an opening party and experience it and accept it and then move on.

Q: After this weekend, would you go again?

A: Of course. South Beach is a true vacation from the parts of reality which can wear you down.

Q: Can you count how many times you saw Nurse?

A: Three: once when she was wandering bleary-eyed into the welcome center to pick up her multitude of free passes and drink tickets and twice when she wildly laughing and dancing with her tongue out at the Ice Palace and thrice at the tail end of the pool party where she was receiving obeisances from her myriad fans.
