Look no more: the best cafe con leche has been found. Or perhaps, the best cafe con leche on the Upper West Side – which is definitely saying something given the heavily Hispanic population in a nabe sometimes known as “Margaritaville.” At last, here is a cafe con leche rather than a leche con cafe – and you will immediately note the difference. None of that cloying quality on the tongue or in the stomach, but instead, a smooth and strong cafe flavor which lingers on the palate and then rises into the head, reminding you of the very good meal which you are now digesting. A flavorful hibiscus margarita, potent without killing your taste buds, and a guacamole which is exactly spicy enough, and a sopa azteca, a piquant and rich tomato soup, as well as creamy cilantro mashed potatoes, and a fresh cactus salad. And for dessert, that tre leche cake which sometimes can kill but at Cafe Frida provides just the right sweet grace note. Ask for Chris, the very professional general manager, and you’ll feel as well-cared for as the care that goes into that cafe con leche.
