When Mother calls, you better answer. And particularly when Mother is Mother Juan Aviance, la męre extraordinaire for over two hundred children (and grandchildren!!!). And when she’s working together with Michael Hades of Hades Music, you know you’d better listen. These two formidable forces in New York nightlife are putting together the mother of all Pride parties, scheduled to keep the children werking and representing from a sublime Fifth Avenue rooftop aerie, high above the Parade on Pride Sunday morning and afternoon. Benefiting Gay Men’s Health Crisis (GMHC), THE AFTERHOURS/PARADE PARTY commences at 8 am on Pride morning, the last Sunday in June, the 29th, with Afterhours by residents Michael Hades in the Loft, and Victor Hugo on the Rooftop. And then, as the Parade kicks off at noon, it’s none other than that sexy beatmaster Angel Moraes in the Loft, and the legendary James Andersen on the roof. No wonder Mother’s got her tail in a twist.

“This party has been carefully planned and packaged by Hades Music, for all to enjoy,” said Mother Juan, “with hosts such as Oscar Rada, David Platanos Powers and Wilyhem Reed.” And as for that spectacular locale? “It’s a beautiful penthouse loft, with a newly-remodeled rooftop terrace,” explained Michael Hades. “We’ll be five blocks from the Empire State Building right on Fifth Avenue. The views of the parade and Empire State Building are spectacular!” We can picture it already: the Parade, the party—Pride in the city!  Or as Michael put it, “This is definitely a perfect continuation into the parade from the Saturday night parties. This is no small space so bring plenty of friends with you!”

For those of us not yet with the program on Hades Music, we asked Michael to give us some insight. He sent us to the Mission Statement of Hades Music, which reads, in part, “To be an organization…that will be a positive influence through house music [and] to provide an outlet for New York City house producers…to release their music and…to throw parties that bring the community together through love, spirituality, dance and music…[and] to give back to the community.” We’ll say “Amen” to that. (And if you haven’t yet heard Michael, you can download his podcasts at http://djmichaelhades.podomatic.com).

Apart from Michael, THE AFTERHOURS/PARADE PARTY will also be serving up Victor Hugo, the mastermind behind those VIP rooftop parties, who also happens to be the Saturday night resident at 19th Street Gym. And then there’s Angel—the legendary Angel Moraes, hitmaker and producer of “Welcome to the Factory,” “Tribal Funktion,” and “To the Rhythm,” who’ll be serving the beats in the Loft as the Parade kicks off. Meanwhile, on the Rooftop Terrace, it’ll be none other than mixmaster James Andersen, celebrated for his many appearances at Montreal’s Black and Blue, and former resident of Roxy. And if four deejays weren’t enough, there’s also a special performance by Lower East Side artists Breeze & Sunshine, performing their new song “Afro Boogie.”

All this—and a fundraiser too, for one of the city’s most necessary and beloved service organizations, Gay Men's Health Crisis. As Michael said, “We chose GMHC as a beneficiary because we wanted to give to an organization that we see results from…and one that was local to New York City. We are glad to be donating the net proceeds of this party to GMHC [because] this is our first Gay Pride Party and we want to [emphasize] the importance of community and pride on that day.” Who could argue with that? “So if you’re in the neighborhood, come by and check us out!We promise you the views are legendary, the music will be legendary, and the money you spend at our event will be going to a good cause.” Or as Mother said, with her customary modesty, “It's going to be a very special day indeed.”
